Trekking in Baliem Valley – the beauty of the Baliem Valley lies in the amazing blend of natural beauty and cultural richness of the Dani tribe. This valley, located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, Papua, offers extraordinary natural scenery, ranging from high mountains, green expanses of grasslands, to dense tropical forests. You can see this place for two days and one night just a few hours walk across the hills and rivers and meet the friendly Dani people. In addition, the Baliem Valley is also home to the Dani tribe who still maintain their traditions and customs, including the Valley Festival which is held every year by displaying war culture, traditional music and dance. Information
- To explore some places in the interior of the traditional villages through the villager’s footpath. It may be muddy and crossing wooden bridges. Prepare yourself for all possibilities that may occur.
- On August 5th-6th, Porters are only available to bring sleeping supplies, cooking supplies and food supplies for 2 days out of town, therefore, it is recommended that you only bring essential items and necessities. Other items or luggage can be stored at the hotel.
- You are required to remain friendly to the environment and respect the culture of the local community

Itinerary
Day 01 / August 4th: Jayapura Arrival – Flight To Wamena – Explore The Traditional Dani Villages (-/L/-)
You may arrive in Papua by today latest at 08:00 am but very recommended to be arrive one day earlier in Papua at Sentani Airport (3rd of August). Meet our team and with all participants at Sentani Airport for the flight depart at 10:00 am to Wamena. (Please note: flights are very often delayed due to weather conditions and we strongly recommend carrying baggage as needed for your trip in the Baliem valley. We begin our tour to Kumugima in direction to the northern part of the Baliem Valley. Few kilometers from Town by drive to Aikima & Kumugima village to explore the Local traditional people of baliem valley. Along the way you will find the Danis working in their sweet potatoes fields and will see their daily activities. We will hike in 1-2 hours through the beautiful countryside and traditional houses of Dani people but you can not avoid a muddy & sliperry path with single log bridge). Walk through the pine forest, enjoy the beautiful nature setting and crossing a bridge over Aike river before you arrive at the main road where the car is waiting for you. Continue to Sumpaima, In Sumpaima village we will see a very old mummy of the famous Dugum clan is proudly presented for your viewing. In the vicinity we will see more picturesque hamlets. Everywhere the friendly natives offer their arts and crafts, weapons and curiosities for our inspection. Stop in the traditional local market. Late afternoon drive back to the Hotel, Dinner will be on your account. Accommodation in the hotel (Walk approx. 1-2 hours).
Day 02 / August 5th: Trekking To Wesangma (B/L/D)
Breakfast at hotel, we will use a truck or 4WD car to go to one of the villages in the southern part of the Baliem Valley which will take around 1,5 hours. This is a new road that has been open since 2021. Along the road we can see a very enchanting panorama of the Baliem Valley until we reach the village we are going to, namely Syokosimo village. On the way to Syokosimo we can stop for a moment to straighten us out and enjoy the beauty of mountains or take pictures. From Syokosimo village we will walk on the footpath for 2-3 hours along the Mugi River while enjoying stunning views of the hills. Depending on your abilities, this village is very close to the previous village and can be reached in 30 minutes by local people. In the afternoon we can visit local people to interact with them. Lunch in box is provided and dinner are prepared. Accommodaton at Local house or Guest House in the village using sleeping bags and mattresses. (Walk approx. 3-4 hours).
Day 03 / August 6th: Trekking To Kurima – Yetni River – Wamena (B/L/-)
After breakfast continue walk to Kurima district for 2 hour. Today we can work more leisurely than the previous day because the distance is shorter and the condition of trail is always flat. In Kurima district we can see better road condition, but we still need one hour more to reach Yetni river where our car waiting us. All trekking trips from the first day to today will depend greatly on weather condition and physically abilities of all the participants. From the car stops before the afternoon we will be taken to the city for 1 hour Journey directly to your accommodation. Dinner will be on your account. Stay at Hotel. (Walk approx. 3-4 hours).
Day 04 / August 7th: Baliem Valley Festival (B/L/-)
Baliem Valley Festival–As indicated in the calender that today is a for you to enjoy the Baliem Valley Festival. (entrance fee to ther festival is included) Your guide is with you all day to ensure you understand what is going on and enjoy every minute of this unique tribal festival. Spend the day at the Festival site and participate in various activities of the Festival. The Baliem Valley Cultural Festival is a very rare chance to witness clans from different indigenous tribes displaying their culture and skills in tribal warfare, dance and music. It is a truly unforgettable experience and a real once in a lifetime opportunity. Lunchboxes is provided from hotel. Late afternoon drive back to Wamena for accommodation. Stay at Hotel. Dinner will be on your account.
Day 05 / August 8th: Baliem Valley Festival (B/L/-)
Baliem Valley Festival– If the schedule of the festival still on, again we will travel by chartered car to the location of the Baliem Valley festival (entrance fee to ther festival is included). The place where they hold the ceremony changes from year to year. The festival has many traditional activities. There is traditional Dani tribe dancing and singing. Also there is a mock battle to show you how they used to fight in the old days. And there are newer activities, like bow and arrow competitions. And even foreigners can get involved in this activity.
Please note: All tour and festival dates will be adjusted according to local condition. Lunchboxes is provided from hotel. Late afternoon drive back to Wamena for accommodation. Dinner will be on your account.
Notes: Based on the schedule of the Baliem Valley Festival is held on August 6th – 8th. This schedule can be change suddenly without prior notice considering that the festival is very dependent on the involvement of the community and as well as local condition, If we can’t see the festival today on Aug. 6th – 8th due to schedule changes, If so we will take another alternative to do a tour to a different places in the Baliem valley.
Day 06 / August 9th: Flight To Jayapura – Next Destination (B/-/-)
Breakfast at hotel, transfer to the Airport for your flight to Jayapura by Wing Air or Trigana Air. Direct connect flight to Sorong, Makasar, Jakarta or Denpasar.
